Fabric lamp shades bring softness to a room, but they also collect dust. In Pakistani homes, open windows, fans, construction dust and everyday use can make a light-coloured shade look dull faster than expected. The good news is that most routine cleaning is simple when you use a gentle method and avoid soaking the fabric.
This guide explains how to clean lamp shades safely, how to deal with common marks and how to protect the lamp so it stays beautiful for longer.

Before you clean
Switch the lamp off, unplug it and allow the bulb and fitting to cool completely. Remove the shade from the base if the construction allows it. Check the care label or product instructions before using any liquid. Some shades are made from delicate fabric, paper, silk or natural fibre and need specialist care.
Do not clean a plugged-in lamp. Do not spray water, glass cleaner or fragrance directly onto the shade. Moisture can leave marks, damage the lining or reach the electrical fitting.
Weekly dusting method
For routine care, use a soft, clean brush, a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a fabric-brush attachment. Support the shade with one hand and brush from top to bottom with light strokes. Work around the inside and outside, paying attention to the top rim where dust settles.
If you use a vacuum, keep the suction low and avoid pressing the nozzle against the fabric. Strong suction can pull at loose fibres or distort the shade. A clean, dry microfibre cloth can work on smooth fabric, but test a hidden area first.

How to handle a small mark
If the manufacturer allows spot cleaning, prepare a small amount of mild soap in lukewarm water. Dip a clean cloth, wring it out thoroughly and dab the mark rather than rubbing it. Use as little moisture as possible. Then dab with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove soap residue and let the shade air-dry completely away from direct sun and heat.
Always test first on an unseen area. Water can create a ring on some fabrics, especially if the shade has a delicate finish. If the mark is large, oily, old or on silk, it is better to consult a professional cleaner than to experiment.
Protect the shade from heat and sunlight
Use the bulb type and wattage recommended for the lamp. A bulb that produces too much heat can discolour the shade or damage the fitting. LED bulbs often produce less heat and use less electricity, but correct wattage and ventilation still matter.
Strong direct sunlight can fade fabric over time. If possible, position the lamp away from a window that receives intense afternoon sun. Rotate the shade occasionally if one side is exposed more than the other.

Care for different shade materials
Linen and cotton shades usually respond well to gentle dry dusting and careful spot treatment. Velvet should be brushed in the direction of the pile and handled with minimal moisture. Silk and silk-look shades should be treated cautiously and may need professional cleaning. Woven jute, rattan or cane shades can often be dusted with a soft brush, but avoid soaking the fibres.
Printed or embroidered shades may bleed if they become wet. Never assume that a fabric is washable just because it looks durable. Keep the care instructions with the lamp after purchase.
Keep the base clean too
Dust the base with a soft dry cloth. For ceramic or glass, follow the manufacturer's instructions and keep liquid away from sockets, switches and cord connections. For metal, use a product intended for that finish; harsh polish can remove colour or leave uneven shine.
Check the cord for fraying and the plug for damage. If anything looks unsafe, stop using the lamp and ask a qualified electrician or the seller for help. A clean lamp is not useful if its electrical parts are compromised.

When should you replace the shade?
Replace a shade when the fabric is permanently stained, the lining is brittle, the frame is bent or the shade no longer sits securely. A new shade can also refresh an old lamp and change the room's colour palette without replacing the base.
